DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Program Manager and the Program Medical Director, and the supervision of the Department of Ophthalmology Medical staff, the Orthoptists performs their duties in a multidisciplinary collaborative ambulatory care setting. They support the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Adult Strabismus, and Neuro-Ophthalmology services.  Their primary role is to contribute in the detection, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with disorders of the visual system and/or eye motility. The Orthoptists work independently within their scope of practice and collaborates with other members of the health care team that may include but is not limited to physicians, learners, technicians, technologists and other Orthoptist(s).


PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Interpret, evaluate and communicate test results and preparing recommendations for patient treatment and management.
  • Perform ocular examination including history taking, visual acuity testing, lensometry, extra-ocular muscle assessment, sensory testing, pupil assessment, applanation tonometry, and refraction.
  • Independently assess patients and help manage patients care in the Orthoptic Clinics
  • Consult with the referring physician regarding medical and/or surgical treatment. 
  • Educate patients and families on their specific ocular disorders.
  • Provide contact lens therapy.
  • Knowledgeable in the type, strength, action and complications of certain ophthalmic medications.
  • Provide support for the Ophthalmology Resident Training Program, Kingston Ophthalmic Training Center, Medical Students and other learners as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certified Orthoptist and graduate of an accredited Orthoptic Program
  • Member or eligibility for membership of the Canadian Orthoptic Council
  • Current BCLS
  • Recent related work experience
  • Proven good attendance and punctuality
  • Proven ability to work efficiently and effectively with children and developmentally delayed patients and their families
  • Proven good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Capable of working in a physically and mentally demanding work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to practice independently and part of a team
  • Demonstrated high clinical standards and a commitment to ongoing education
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands as described for the area of work.
