Job Summary/Purpose: Under limited supervision, the Certified Orthoptist performs a variety of general patient care activities and ophthalmic diagnostic tests. Assists ophthalmologists with ophthalmic exams.

Required Minimum Training and Education: High school diploma and two years of specialized ophthalmic experience. Completion of a two year certified ophthalmic technician/orthoptist program and pass the JCAHPO ophthalmic technician/orthoptist examination.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: JCAHPO certified as both a certified ophthalmic technician (COT) and Orthoptist (CO). Completion of 27 CEUs for COT and 15 CEUs for CO recertification every three years. CPR certified.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: Performs advanced medical history taking, checks patient’s visual acuity, dilates patient’s eyes and establishes rapport with patient during examinations and diagnostic testing. Performs basic slit lamp exams, visual fields, color vision testing, lensometry, tonometry, keratometry, retinoscopy, refractometry, pahcometry, manual Ks, IOL Master, topography, fundus photography. PAM and OCTs. Perform advanced orthoptist duties including fitting prisms on patient’s glasses and follow-up to adjust prisms as necessary. Perform ocular motility measurements in diagnostic fields of gaze. Evaluate and treat eye movement and eye alignment problems in children and adults. Evaluate and treat patients with disorders of the visual system with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movement. Teach patients convergence training with stereograms. Proficient with Oasis, EMR and all ancillary equipment. Assists with office surgical procedures. Prepares and maintains exam rooms to ensure that they are adequately stocked with supplies and that all equipment and instruments are in proper working order. Cleans and prepares instruments for surgical procedures and sterilization. Provides direct escort for patients to and from examination rooms and any ancillary testing areas. Follows guest relations policies: is polite, attentive and courteous to all patients and family members. Screens patient phone calls and questions. Performs other related duties incidental to the work.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
