American Orthoptic Council®
The AOC® welcomes international applicants who wish to pursue certification in the United States of America. Our goal is to maintain a fair, consistent, and rigorous pathway that upholds the high standards of orthoptic practice in the US. [1986 ruling; revised 2014; revised 2025]
To be eligible for the AOC® Orthoptist certifying examinations, international applicants must meet the following criteria:
- European Diploma for Orthoptists Europeandiploma@euro-orthoptics.com
All international applicants are required to pass the online European Diploma for Orthoptists examination. This exam serves as a standardized benchmark to assess foundational knowledge in orthoptics across different training systems worldwide.
2. English Language Proficiency
If English is not the primary language, applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency. A score demonstrating upper-intermediate proficiency (CEFR level B2) is required.
This ensures ability to:
- Understand the written components of the exam
- Participate fully in the oral examination
- Communicate effectively with patients
We accept any of the following certifications:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) – High-intermediate minimum scores required with a total score of no less than 72
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall minimum score required: Band 6 – Competent User with no section with a score below 5.5
- Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - Minimum score required: B2
- Other official English language proficiency certifications are also accepted, provided the score is equivalent to the levels outlined above.
Case-by-Case Exceptions: Applicants who have completed their education, currently reside, or are working in countries where English is an official language may be exempt from this requirement on a case-to-case basis.

3. Formal Orthoptic Training
Applicants must submit verifiable documentation of formal, structured orthoptic training completed in their country of origin. This training must result in a recognized qualification, certification, or licensure.
Please note:
- Informal or observational training alone is not sufficient.
- Applicants who have only completed observational experiences are encouraged to enroll in an accredited orthoptic program to meet formal training requirements.
Case-by-Case Consideration: In select circumstances, applicants with extensive training or professional experience that clearly demonstrates advanced clinical competency may be reviewed for eligibility on an individual basis.
4. Clinical Training in the U.S.
No U.S.-based clinical training is required. Your formal training, national certification (if applicable), successful completion of the European Diploma, and passing the AOC® board exams together provide a comprehensive evaluation of your readiness to practice orthoptics at a high level.
However, if the applicant is unsuccessful in passing the AOC® board examination, the AOC® strongly recommends enrolling in a formal US-based orthoptic training program before attempting a second time. This additional training can provide valuable clinical exposure, help address any gaps in knowledge or practice, and better prepare applicants for future examination attempts.
5. AOC® Board Examination
The AOC® certifying examinations are rigorous and comprehensive, assessing both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding. Passing the AOC® certifying board exams is required to demonstrate preparation to practice orthoptics in the U.S. The AOC® has resources available to the applicants who would like to take the board certifying exam.
