Clinical Practice of a Certified Orthoptist®

Orthoptics is a specialized field within allied health and ophthalmology, focusing on diagnosing and treating visual disorders affecting binocular vision and eye movements. Certified Orthoptists® (CO®) play a key role in patient care, often working alongside ophthalmologists to manage conditions such as amblyopia, strabismus, and double vision across all ages.

Though small—fewer than 400 COs® in the U.S.—the profession has a long history of over 80 years and diverse practice settings, including hospitals, clinics, research, and surgical assistance. Orthoptists contribute to patient evaluation, treatment planning, surgical support, and research, as well as education and program leadership.

This career offers opportunities for leadership and involvement in a professional community dedicated to advancing eye health and vision quality.
